TEAM ACADEMY TRAINING

Part of the Surf curriculum focuses on Academy-style training. Academy sessions are included in the player's Club dues.

These trainings will be developed and implemented by Academy Director, Jay Vela (academydirector@ewsurfsc.com).

Academy schedules:

Team Academy Training Structure

Trainers: Jay Vela and Team Academy Staff

When: 60 minute sessions.

How: We will structure the sessions into four 8-12 minute stations.  We will do a warmup and then have four technical training stations.

  • 0-10 minutes - Dynamic warmup.

  • Station 1 - Station 1 is technical footwork patterns/or skill moves. 3 of these patterns/moves for 45 seconds then juggling for 45 seconds (considered a rest). You will repeat this twice for each move. That should equal 9 minutes, 1 minute for a quick water break.

  • Station 2 - Station 2 of a skill exercise. 4-5 minutes going in one direction and 4-5 minutes going the other direction. This allows us to make sure that the strong foot and weak foot are both being worked on.

  • Station 3 - Station 3 of a skill exercise. This should be a different exercise or pattern but the same topic as part 1 and 2. This also should be more advanced if possible.

  • Station 4 - Station 4 of a skill exercise. This should be a different exercise or pattern but the same topic as part 1, 2 and 3. This also should be more advanced if possible.

Technical Topics

Team Academy Training is focused solely on the technical aspects of the game. These topics include the following;

  • Footwork patterns (touching every part of the foot)

  • Dribbling skill moves (ability to use them in a game)

  • Passing (correct technique and pace)

  • First touch (all parts of the foot and directional)

  • Movement off the ball (this is intertwined with passing)

  • Change of direction

  • How to maximize speed and movements with the ball

Coaching Points: The technique, quality and pace are the most important points that we are going to focus on. At the ages that we are working with, we want to push the players and make things uncomfortable for each player. If they are uncomfortable, they are learning and developing.

Team Academy Summary: Repetition is key when it comes to the Team Academy Trainings. We will try to get each player 500-700 touches on the ball each session. Our trainers and training sessions will not be focused on any tactical work. Tactical work is for a team's individual coach to focus on. Because of that, our quick 60 minute session will not be your standard USSF structured session. Our session is solely focused on ball mastery for each player. We will also have some individual defending sessions as well. We will help you develop the finer points of The Player.
